Watwaat, ‘bat’ in Arabic, is the personal website of Naoki Tomasini,
professional journalist and photographer, specialised in Middle East and Asia.

 

Biography:

Naoki Tomasini was born in Bergamo, in the north-west of Italy, August the 25th 1975 from a Japanese mother and an Italian father. He has a degree in theoretical philosophy and, before starting his journalistic career, he committed himself to painting, graphic design and art history.

In 2002 he went for the first time to the West Bank as a volunteer for the research center Palestine Monitor, founded by Mustafa Barghouti (the former minister of Information of the Palestinian national unity Government) and for the Alternative Information Centre of Jerusalem, managed by Israelis and Palestinians together.

Since 2004 until June 2009 he worked as a professional journalist for PeaceReporter, an Italian online newspaper and printed magazine dealing with conflicts and humanitarian issues edited by the italian NGO Emergency. He was responsible for the Middle East area and for two years he also worked as a photo-editor.

During the last three years he has published written and photographic reportages from Nepal, Tibet, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, West Bank, Gaza Strip, Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan. He has also covered Italian issues, such as the life  conditions of the Roma population in Naples during the latest waste emergency, and that of the migrants living at the margins of Italian society.

Naoki Tomasini has resigned from PeaceReporter June the first 2009, same date of the launch of Watwaat, in order to fully dedicate himself as a free professional to photojournalism. His aim is now to report conflicts, in the widest sense of the term, through images.

In the following months he is planning to return to Iraq and to spend a few months in Central Asia. His will focus on the following topics: borders, women, migrants, workers’ rights, religions and sects, religious and ethnic minorities, drug trafficking, energy and environment.
